Ways to Seek God

By Joyce Dunaway  @DunawayJoyce

Those who seek me find me (Proverbs 8:17 NIV).

I remember playing hide and seek as a child—then playing it with other small children whom I claim as grandchildren. It’s fun, exciting, and challenging—finding the best place to hide. Often with small children you have to reveal your whereabouts so they don’t get frustrated and start crying. Some children are only partially hidden so you have to pretend you don’t see them. Sometimes they’ll jump out and deliberately show themselves.

Isn’t it exciting to know we can find God when we seek Him? He wants us to find Him. He desires a relationship with Him so much He sent His only Son to die for our sins. He’s not playing hide and seek. He’s always present and available.

Seek means to crave, to look for, to pursue. Our heartfelt desire needs to be craving a relationship with Him.

Following are some ways we can seek God:

Study His Word

One way God speaks to us is through His words in the Bible. All scripture is given by inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16 NKJV).

Pray

It’s so amazing that we can talk to and listen to Almighty God. In the Old Testament God spoke through prophets and kings who told the people what God had revealed to them. Only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies once a year. But today we have direct access to God twenty-four hours a day. He wants us come to Him with our concerns, desires, frustrations, and requests for His intervention in the lives of our loved ones who may be struggling with the cares of this world.

The Son of God understood the necessity of prayer. Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God (Luke 6:12 NKJV). We are encouraged to pray. Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving (Colossians 4:2 NKJV).

Be Still

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth (Psalm 46:10 NKJV).

This involves clearing our minds of everything except God’s presence. As a Type A personality this is difficult for me. Lists of what I need to accomplish are racing through my mind so I have to really focus to be still and quiet, but I’ve found that’s when I hear God’s still small voice.

Worship

We can worship God anytime or anywhere. Corporate worship in church is awesome, but we can also worship at home or while doing errands. Worship includes praise, thanksgiving, hearing God’s Word, and confession of sin. I enjoy listening to and singing along with Christian music while driving or riding my exercise bike. I also enjoy sitting in the swing and observing God’s handiwork—birds, flowers, the sky, and other elements of nature. Reflecting on God’s creation gives me peace and keeps me focused on God.

I would love to hear how you seek God and how this draws you closer to Him. Please share your thoughts in the section below.
