How Reading Can Help You Fulfill Your Dreams
by Joyce Dunaway @DunawayJoyce
Joseph Addison says, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
Stephen King says, “Reading is the creative center of a writer’s life. If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write.”
Following are some ways reading can help you achieve your goals:
Improves Your Craft
By reading craft books in the field you are pursuing, you gain knowledge and wisdom from people who have achieved the goal you wish to achieve.
There are numerous ‘How To’ books on almost every craft and skill you might want to learn.
As a fiction writer, reading demonstrates the pace, plot, and development of characters in the genre you are composing.
Gives You Confidence
When you read about the trials and struggles others have endured to reach their goals, you will realize the path may not be easy, but is attainable.
Prepares Your Mind
Stephen King says, “Reading creates an ease and intimacy with the process of writing. Constant reading will pull you into a mind-set where you can write eagerly and without self-consciousness.”
Satisfies Your Soul
Reading God’s Word gives you peace. “Those who love your law have great peace.” (Psalm 119:165)
“All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:15-16)
