How to Follow God’s Leading in the Pursuit of Your Dreams

by Joyce Dunaway @DunawayJoyce

Once we have discerned the dream God has called us to achieve, our next step is to follow His leading. Many times He gives us the vision, but only shows us one step at a time how to accomplish it.

Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord; Point out the right road for me to follow (Psalm 25:4).

Following are some suggestions to help you follow God’s leading in the pursuit of your dreams:

LISTEN

Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10). By spending time in prayer and Bible study, God will speak to us. Our job is to be open to listening.

OBEY

Once God has told us what to do, the next step is to obey—not question or argue with His plan. Immediately do what He has suggested. It may not make sense to you right then, but later God will provide clarity. “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you  hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

BE FLEXIBLE

Last year when I attended Blue Ridge Mountains Christina Writers’ Conference, God nudged me to attend classes about writing Bible studies. I tried to explain to Him I was there to learn how to write novels. I relented and did as He suggested. The blessings were tremendous. The next month I had a Bible study published in the on-line magazine Refresh.

STEP OUT IN FAITH

What God suggests is often scary. Remember He is a big God and will help us overcome our fears. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged (Deuteronomy 31:8)

ACCEPT HIS TIMING

As humans, we are often impatient. We expect fast results. It may take years of working at your goals to see the completion of your dream. But God’s timing is perfect. The Lord will work out his plans for my life (Psalm 138:8).

I would love to hear how following God’s leading has helped you in the pursuit of your dreams. Please share your thoughts in the section below.
